Vocal groups are groups of people who get together to sing. They are also called choirs or choirs, and they can be classified depending on who sings, the number of people in it, or whether or not it includes musical accompaniment:
-Who sings?
- There are choirs formed only by children, only by women or only by men. They are called choirs of equal voices.
- The most common are mixed choirs, which are made up of male voices and female voices. The high voices are soprano, mezzo-soprano and alto; The bass voices are tenor, baritone and bass.
The soprano voice is the highest of the female voices.
The mezzo-soprano voice is the intermediate voice between the soprano and the alto.
The contralto is the deepest of the female voices.
The tenor voice is the highest of the male voices.
The baritone voice is intermediate between tenor and bass.
The bass voice is the deepest and most consistent.
- How many people sing?
Vocal groups can have from 4 to more than 100 singers. Those that have between 10 and 20 voices are called chamber choirs. If they have more than 20 voices, they are known as choirs or symphonic choirs.

Some choirs are accompanied by orchestras or groups of instruments.
When a choir sings without accompaniment it is called a cappella or a cappella choir. This expression comes from Italian and means "as in the chapel", because, in the past, music with instruments was not allowed in churches.
