The human
voice is produced in the following way: When you breathe out, the air leaving
the lungs passes through the larynx.
There it
makes the vocal cords vibrate, producing sound. The sound of the voice is
amplified in the resonators (mouth, nostrils, head and thorax), which perform a
function similar to that of the soundboards in musical instruments.
The voices
of women and children (the latter, also known as white voices) are higher
because the larynx and vocal cords are shorter than those of men.
The size of
the larynx and vocal cords is larger in the male voice, which produces a deeper
voice.
Children
and women produce high voices that we call soprano, mezzo-soprano and
alto. Men give rise to deep voices that we call tenor, baritone and bass.
